What does the Nutri-Score letter on the packaging really tell you?
Published 21 October 2026

Hello! Wednesday is our day for learning.
On the supermarket shelf, one yogurt is high in protein, another is reduced in sugar, and a third is made with natural ingredients. Which should you choose? The coloured Nutri-Score letter on the front of the packaging is meant to make this comparison easier, but in Estonia, this little label has sparked a big debate. Food and biotechnology student Anette Auväärt explored what this letter actually measures and what it does not.
One fact to take away
Nutri-Score does not assess your portion size. The same letter stays on the packaging whether you eat one biscuit or the whole packet. The label is most useful for comparing similar products: yogurt with yogurt, bread with bread.
Can chocolate cake get a green letter? And why might dark rye bread and butter get a poorer rating, even though they are traditional foods? You will find the answers in the blog, and at the end of the article, you can earn one knowledge point by answering review questions.
