Salt is quite a peculiar character in the world of nutrition. On the one hand, nearly every health recommendation warns against it: cut down on salt, avoid salty foods, read the back of the package. On the other hand, salt is one of the few substances you simply could not live without. Without sodium, your nerves, muscles, and heart would not function.
This is where things get rather confusing. Should you be afraid of salt or not? Is the more expensive Himalayan salt on the supermarket shelf actually better than cheap table salt? And if you exercise and work up a proper sweat once a week, are your salt needs really any different from those of someone who spends most of the week sitting on the couch?
Why does your body need salt in the first place?
Salt is made up of sodium and chloride. Sodium is what nutritionists are usually concerned about, but it is actually one of the most important minerals for the body.
Sodium plays several important roles in the body:
Maintains fluid balance.
Enables the transmission of nerve impulses.
Contributes to muscle contraction, including contraction of the heart muscle.
Helps nutrients move across cell membranes.
Simply put, if sodium levels drop too low too quickly, your muscles and brain will not function as they should. This is exactly why you sometimes feel tired or dizzy after sweating heavily.
How much salt is actually the right amount?
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults consume less than 5 grams of salt, or less than 2 grams of sodium, per day from all sources combined. Five grams may sound a little abstract, but in practice, it is about one teaspoon.
The problem, however, is that most people greatly exceed this amount. According to the WHO, average global salt intake is approximately 11 grams per day, which is more than twice the recommended amount. The vast majority of European countries exceed the limit set by the WHO.
Why is this a problem in the first place? In the long term, excess sodium raises blood pressure, which in turn increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Reducing salt intake is therefore considered one of the most cost-effective public health measures.
Can too little salt also be a problem?
Yes, of course. If the sodium concentration in blood plasma drops too low, a condition called hyponatremia may develop. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, fatigue, muscle cramps and, in severe cases, confusion and impaired consciousness.
Hyponatremia is not an everyday risk for most people; sodium deficiency is extremely rare in people who eat a typical mixed diet. Those at greater risk include older adults, endurance athletes and people who follow a very strict salt-free diet without a medical indication.
The effects of salt are not quite as simple as more salt automatically leading to higher blood pressure in everyone. This was also demonstrated by the large Intersalt study, which compared 52 populations around the world. Individual results varied, and the association was not equally strong in every population. Looking at the broader picture, however, a clear trend emerged: where more sodium was consumed, blood pressure rose more rapidly with age (Intersalt Cooperative Research Group, 1988).
This does not mean that salt should be feared or consumed as little as possible. Instead, it is best to avoid both extremes. For most people, however, the practical problem is excessive rather than insufficient salt intake.
Where does this salt actually come from?
Most people assume that their salt intake depends solely on how much salt they add to their food. In reality, an estimated 80% of daily salt intake already comes from processed and prepared foods.
Here are some examples of how little food it takes to add up to 1 gram of salt (approximately and depending on the product):
8 g of salted herring
40 g of potato chips or pickles
50 g of smoked ham
90 g of cheese
Processed foods in particular are what usually cause daily salt intake to rise quickly.
Salt and exercise: do you need more salt if you work out?
The same logic applies here that I have previously discussed in the article on electrolytes: during longer, sweatier workouts, it makes sense to consider replenishing sodium in addition to drinking water, but this is usually not necessary after a short gym workout.
Myths about the health benefits of different types of salt
Is there any difference at all between pink Himalayan salt and regular table salt? The short answer: practically none.
Both regular table salt and pink Himalayan salt consist predominantly of sodium chloride. Himalayan salt also contains dozens of trace minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron), which give it its pinkish hue and slightly different taste. The problem is the amount: these minerals make up only approximately 1–2% of the salt, which is nutritionally insignificant. To get your daily potassium requirement from Himalayan salt, for example, you would have to eat several kilograms of salt, which is, of course, a completely unrealistic amount and dangerous to your health.
In terms of sodium content, the two types of salt have practically the same effect on blood pressure and health. The only real difference worth knowing is that regular iodized table salt contains iodine, which Himalayan salt usually does not. Iodine can also be obtained from other sources (fish, dairy products, eggs), but if your diet is otherwise low in iodine, you should not casually discard iodized salt simply because pink salt seems more "natural".
In summary, if you like the taste or texture of pink salt, there is nothing wrong with using it. But do not buy it thinking that it is a significantly healthier choice. In terms of quantity and effects, these salts are practically equivalent.
The same story applies to Celtic salt, which is often marketed as an especially mineral-rich and healthy choice. It is true that it contains some additional minerals, but Celtic salt also consists predominantly of sodium chloride and affects your health in essentially the same way as regular table salt.
If a nutritionist assures you that Celtic salt specifically makes you feel better, that feeling may be partly explained by the placebo effect: believing in the product's special effects can itself create a sense of well-being that does not stem from the product's actual properties.
How can you manage your salt intake sensibly?
You can do this with just a few simple habits:
Choose fresh foods over processed foods. That is where most hidden salt comes from.
Read the back of the package, not the front. "Reduced salt" does not always mean low in salt.
Rinse canned beans and vegetables before use.
Do not be afraid to replenish your sodium stores after long, sweaty workouts.
Should you eat less salt?
If your diet includes a lot of ready-made meals, sausages, cheese, and salty snacks, your salt intake is likely to exceed the recommended 5 grams, and cutting back can provide real benefits. However, if you mostly eat home-cooked food, exercise regularly, and sweat a lot, salt is probably not your main concern.
Salt is not your enemy. It is one of many minerals to which the old truth applies: both too little and too much are problematic. However, for most people, the real risk is still "too much," and this can be significantly reduced through simple choices.
