No one downloads a nutrition app simply out of curiosity. Behind it is always a moment of realization: something has to change.
But who are these people, really? We analyzed data from 57,537 Geneto Lifestyle users to find the answer.
The typical user: a slightly overweight woman
The average user is 170.5 cm tall, weighs 77.4 kg at the start of their journey, and has a body mass index of 26.6—meaning they are slightly overweight.
And that user is most likely a woman. As many as 76.5% of users are women, while only 23.5% are men. This ratio is telling, but not surprising—women tend to become concerned about their eating habits sooner.
The numbers confirm this: women have an average starting weight of 73.5 kg (BMI 26.4), compared with 89.5 kg for men (BMI 27.5). In other words, men only realize that something needs to be done once the problem has already become considerably greater.
More than half of users are overweight when they start
When they first open the app, 55% of users are already in the overweight (29.2%) or obese (25.8%) category. Of all users, 41% start at a normal weight and just 4% are underweight.
This shows that, for most people, a nutrition app is not a preventive tool—many only turn to one once their weight has already become a concern.
In the next post, we will look at the goals users set for themselves and consider whether or not they are realistic.
